SSGS vs SSGM

After many years, SSGS at long last won the annual meet between the Malaysian Senior Golfers and ourselves. The Game was held at Sembawang Country Club on 22 June. The Malaysians came by coach and by cars. Some came from as far as Sarawak.

The weather was fine and the participants enjoyed their golf. Many turned up to meet their old Malaysian friends. Politics between our two countries can blow hot and cold. The golfers of our two countries have remained warm through the years. It was the wish of the captains that the games remain as a symbol of our close relationship.

The Singapore Winner of Haikou Cup

When we announced in our SSGS Newsletter about the $299.00 (3 games, free green, caddy fees, meals, hotel accommodation, transfers etc..) Haikou Cup, only 10 members took up the special offer. This was no surprise as members probably felt the 10 who signed up must be “matto” (mad), “stupido or pazzo” (crazy). So hot?. They’ll be roasted in the Hainan sun. Surprisingly, the weather was “springtime in the Rockies” – very cool and cloudy and sans sun, at a daily temperature of 24 deg. It was not humid as Singapore.

Unfortunately, GolfHub which offered SSGS all the 65 places had to extend it to the public and they were snapped up quickly. However, Agnes of GolfHub managed to squeeze 10 more places for SSGS members. Why did it turn out to be so popular? It was a very good value for money golf tour..

Firstly, we played in Hainan’s No.1 golf course, the Meishi or Mayflower GC. Green fee for walk in guest is about S$200.00 we paid only S$140.00 . inclusive of caddy fee and buffet lunch.
So you play three games with free green , caddy fee plus lunch and transfer to and from the golf course. Next, your accommodation. We stayed gratis in a $135 per night 4 star hotel with breakfast and free transfer to and from airport

Finally, the Hainan Tourist Promotion Board put up a very entertaining prize – presentation cum dinner programme on the last night. Not only was the 10 course sumptuous dinner, there were also dancers and singers who performed during the dinner.

As for the Haikou Cup, none of our SSGS members really bothered. They just enjoyed the golf, social company, weather and experience. How could our apehs compete with alligators, Buayas and crocodiles from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia?? But surprisingly, the winner of the Haikou Cup turned up to be our Singapore 14 year old golfer from Laguna National Golf & Country Club.

The objective of reporting the Haikou Cup is really to urge more of SSGS members to participate on another Haikou Cup in September 2009. The Hainan Tourist Promotion Board have raised the price by $100.00 but we think it is still very value for money.
