Pork Noodles - Try it

Popular Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodles

Tue Aug 25 2009
Tai Hwa’s pork noodles is $4 and deserving of the slightly pricier bill.

Makan Sites
Singapore, August 25, 2009 - GOOD things happen when you take time off to go on a walk.
Recently, on a whim, I decided to take a walk around the vicinity of Lavender MRT station. My adventure was rewarded with the discovery of two lovely places to sit for a bite.
My first stop was next to the station, right behind the ICA Building.
Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodles, at Blk 466 Crawford Lane, #01-02, is certainly not unknown.
Go there during lunch and you’ll see what I mean.
By 11.45am, the queue starts and continues until the lunch rush is over. After all, it has nearly 80 years of history. It started at Hill Street, then moved to Marina Square before finding it’s new home at Crawford Lane four years ago.
The noodles start at $4, slightly more expensive than most coffee shop stalls. But it’s worth paying the difference.
The noodles are firm – almost crisp – and the ingredients that come with it are fresh.
I recommend ordering the mee kia version (the thin noodles), dry.
There was pig liver with the minced meat, and kudos to the stall for keeping the liver pink and soft.
I had mine with a dash of chilli and loads of vinegar, and that was satisfying. The stall will oblige those wanting more vinegar.
Also, try the dumpling soup ($5) if you’re with two or more friends.
Even though it’s a packed coffee shop, don’t let that scare you away. If you’re into minced pork noodles, this is one of the best places to check out.
Drop in early – the stall opens by about 9.30am – and you should be able to enjoy a leisurely bowl of noodles.
But don’t drop in on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. The stall will be closed then.

We were at Hua Hin Thailand

We Were At Hua Hin

A team of 27 senior golfers led by the President, Secretary and Captain SSGS went to Hua Hin for the 26th Asean Senior Golf Championship-27-29 july 2009. Players selected were mainly those who had done well at the SSGS monthly medals and the better golfers of the society.
It was a 3 hour coach journey from Bangkok to the seaside resort of Hua Hin. The golfers from Asean were put up at the Dulsit Thani Hotel. It is classy with resort facilities and a lovely view of the sea. The beach was very clean and inviting. However, with the hectic golfing schedule over 3 days, there was little time to stop and stare.
The AGM for the Confederation of Asean Senior Golferss’ Association(CASGA) was traditionally held in conjunction with the Championship. President Toh Shung Chee, Hon Sec Pang Boon Hee and Captain Raymond Tan represented SSGS at the AGM. The chairmanship was handed over to Thailand by Singapore. Thailand would hold the chair until the next Championship in 2010. Brunei will be hosting the 27th Championship next year, tentatively in October.
Singapore made a pitch for the formula to allocate places for the Champiionship to be reviewed. Currently the allocation of places is based on country membership size. Thus smaller countries like Singapore and Brunei are at the losing end with only 25 and 18 places respectively compared to more than 50 places each for Malaysia, Phillipines and Indonesia. The AGM agreed that the basis of allocation would be reviewed for a decision to be taken at the next AGM in 2010.
The daily routine was taxing. Breakfast was at 5 am and the coach departure for the 2 courses, Springfield and Imperial Lake View, was at 6 am . The 2 courses were reasonably challenging and well maintained. They were, however, flat and peppered with lots of bunkers, especially around the greens. Scores of the leading golfers were impressive. The Filipinos dominated the field followed closely by the Bruneians. Singapore Seniors only managed an enjoyable golfing trip! Only Andrew Lee made the roll call for a runner up position in the stableford age group category. JS Lee also made it on stage to qualify for one of the Octogenarian achievement awards.
SSGS made arrangements for a separate game at the Black Mountain course. It was generally agreed that the course was much better in terms of quality, maintenance and scenic beauty, than those for the Champiionship. With no pressure from competition, our members had good scores and came back with renewed confidence in their respective games. We recommend the course for those who intend to make a trip to Hua Hin

Meeting Friends - SICC vs SSGS

Meeting of Friends—SICC vs SSGS

The phone at SSGS office did not stop ringing for a few weeks after it was announced that the annual friendly between SICC and SSGS would be held on 21 Aug 2009. There was overwhelming support for the event and those who signed up late could not be accommodated. SSGS members who were also SICC members cooperated by playing for SICC so that more non –SICC members could play.

It was with great enthusiasm that 144 golfers teed off at 1 pm at the Sime Course. But the weather dampened spirits somewhat when the sky burst with a heavy downpour after most of the flights had just completed one hole. Those who were near the clubhouse turned back and some resigned themselves to the pint of beer. Those caught on the course found shelter but it must have been quite uncomfortable. There was lightning and thunder and play only resumed after more than two hours.

The friendly competition was called off. Golfers were told to enjoy their game and the prizes would be given out in a lucky draw. The weather gradually improved and most of the flights completed at least 16 holes. There were many tales told of missed birdies and putts. There was the weather to blame for those who lost their bets. Despite the poor weather, there were all smiles as the golfers returned with their score cards.

Dinner was, as usual, a happy event. SSGS made sure that there was free flow of beer. Excellent wine was donated by Ben Foods which also offered special rates to SSGS members for purchase of wines. Albert Goh kindly provided the hard liquor for the real drinkers. Member Sin Chok rendered his Hainanese jokes to all who would hear. President SICC, Paul Thomas with other members of the SICC Committee were at the main table with SSGS President Toh Shung Chee and Patron Abraham Loh.

The participants went home satisfied with another happy event to be filed in their memories.

Ostereoarthrits by Lim Keok Meng

Keok Meng sends this advice to fellow members. You wish to listen to him or not..it is up to you

Immediately, after my return from the Mediterranean cruise, I began to walk with a knee ache.
It is 3 months now and I am 95% cured now.
My orthopaedic surgeon says it is early Osteoarthrits
How did I get it? And how you may avoid getting it?

1st. Old age and 20% in this world suffer from it.

2nd. I used to climb over 50 steps every week in the hilly park behind my house,
taking,2 steps at a time.Dr says avoid climbing stairs. Govt building lifts in all HDB estates

3rd And the real cause of my knee ache is CLIMBING the Greek theatres and hilly tourist sites
like Santorini (Greek island),Acropolis, Dubrovnik (Croatia) and Taormina (Sicily)- See one of my photos above.

I had to climb to the top of the theatres---being a photo-video enthusiast.
And many of them - in Sicily, Turkey and Athens

His advice is to avoid walking steps as much as possible.

Members Column - Golf trip to Yunnan China

A group of senior golfers led by ssgs member Dr Ng went on a private golf of courses in Kunming and Lijiang. The 12-man team took a five day tour with Yunnan International Travel Service. And played five and a half games at Sunshine Golf Club,LJG Ancient Town Golf Club, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club and Spring City Moutain and Lake courses.
Except for the sporadic rain, the trip was very enjoyable- full of fun and laughter. There were also some hilarious and serious exchanges about health such as …..Is coffee good?, Is egg yolk good? And Is sex good for health?
We had also some lessons in gardening from Raymond Koh who is fanatical about it.
For information of other members trip costs about $2,200 inclusive of air travel, 5-star hotels , green fees and breakfast with a special free dinner. Please contact Dr Ng if you need more information. (The above pictures show CSTay's flight at one of the scenic green at Spring City Lake Course and Dr Ng keeping a watchful eye on the golfers' weapons at Kunming airport)

What is he up to?

Some members dont give up. Over 60 already and trying to show that he is young again. Here is a member showing off his paddling skill at the MacRitchie Reservoir. Apparently canoeing is quite simple and good for the body - tuning up for a good swing at the golf course.

If you are interested you can rent a kayak for $15 per hour and $7.50 if you use a two seater with a friend. The place is at the Paddler Lodge located at the far right from the entrance of the reservoir. It is run by the Canoe Federation and open from 9 - 5 pm except Mondays and Public Holidays. I tried it the other day and found it to be cool ....a good morning exercise amidst the serenity of the beautiful lush greenery of the MacRitchie Reservoir.....
more information
MacRitchie Reservoir, located off Lornie Road and completed in the late 1860s, was the first water supply system implemented in Singapore. The Impounding Reservoir, as it was then called, came about through the donation of S$13,000 by philanthropist Tan Kim Seng in 1857. The reservoir was renamed Thomson Road Reservoir in 1907 and its name was changed again to MacRitchie Reservoir in 1922 after James MacRitchie, who was the Municipal Engineer of Singapore from 1883 to 1895.

SSGS vs SSGM

After many years, SSGS at long last won the annual meet between the Malaysian Senior Golfers and ourselves. The Game was held at Sembawang Country Club on 22 June. The Malaysians came by coach and by cars. Some came from as far as Sarawak.

The weather was fine and the participants enjoyed their golf. Many turned up to meet their old Malaysian friends. Politics between our two countries can blow hot and cold. The golfers of our two countries have remained warm through the years. It was the wish of the captains that the games remain as a symbol of our close relationship.

The Singapore Winner of Haikou Cup

When we announced in our SSGS Newsletter about the $299.00 (3 games, free green, caddy fees, meals, hotel accommodation, transfers etc..) Haikou Cup, only 10 members took up the special offer. This was no surprise as members probably felt the 10 who signed up must be “matto” (mad), “stupido or pazzo” (crazy). So hot?. They’ll be roasted in the Hainan sun. Surprisingly, the weather was “springtime in the Rockies” – very cool and cloudy and sans sun, at a daily temperature of 24 deg. It was not humid as Singapore.

Unfortunately, GolfHub which offered SSGS all the 65 places had to extend it to the public and they were snapped up quickly. However, Agnes of GolfHub managed to squeeze 10 more places for SSGS members. Why did it turn out to be so popular? It was a very good value for money golf tour..

Firstly, we played in Hainan’s No.1 golf course, the Meishi or Mayflower GC. Green fee for walk in guest is about S$200.00 we paid only S$140.00 . inclusive of caddy fee and buffet lunch.
So you play three games with free green , caddy fee plus lunch and transfer to and from the golf course. Next, your accommodation. We stayed gratis in a $135 per night 4 star hotel with breakfast and free transfer to and from airport

Finally, the Hainan Tourist Promotion Board put up a very entertaining prize – presentation cum dinner programme on the last night. Not only was the 10 course sumptuous dinner, there were also dancers and singers who performed during the dinner.

As for the Haikou Cup, none of our SSGS members really bothered. They just enjoyed the golf, social company, weather and experience. How could our apehs compete with alligators, Buayas and crocodiles from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia?? But surprisingly, the winner of the Haikou Cup turned up to be our Singapore 14 year old golfer from Laguna National Golf & Country Club.

The objective of reporting the Haikou Cup is really to urge more of SSGS members to participate on another Haikou Cup in September 2009. The Hainan Tourist Promotion Board have raised the price by $100.00 but we think it is still very value for money.

Senior golfers visit museum

Senior golfers visit museum

Some 35 members and their friends attended a guided tour of the special exhibition of Emperor Kangxi at the Asian Civilisations Museum. The curator of the exhibition conducted the tour and it was most interesting and informative. Members learnt of Kangxi’s wise reign and his achievements. There were exhibits from the Palace Museum in Beijing and the Chinese Archives some of which were travelling for the first time,
On display was a gown worn by the Emperor, his royal seal hunting gear and armour. There were scrolls recording Emperor Kangxi’s visits to the various parts of his empire. Of particular interest was a copy of the imperial exam script submitted by one of the scholars.
Really a rare opportunity to see artifacts ffrom China. For those who were aat the Asian Civilisations Museum for the first time, it was an eye opener. They did not realize that we have such a world class museum. Members asked for more such visits. – extract from SSGS NEWS Aug 09.
