SSGS vs SGSM – A Rushing Game of Golf

The annual game between SSGS and our brothers from across the Causeway, the Senior Golfers Society of Malaysia, was held ‘overseas’ on the island of Batam. Our Malaysian friends took the opportunity to make it a golfing expedition and hired a bus from KL. They took a ferry ride from the Johore Terminal at Stulang which brought them to Batam.

For our players, we met at the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal on Monday 28 June for our 8.00 am departure to the Nongsapura Ferry Point. From there, it was but a three minute bus ride to Palm Springs Golf & Beach Resort. We eagerly awaited the arrival of our Malaysian friends who showed up on the dot at 8.30 am but a communication mix-up with the bags meant that we were only able to tee-off at 9.30 am

The Gods were not kind to us as mid-way, the skies opened up and all the buggies took a sharp turn back towards the clubhouse. As it was nearing lunch, many took this break to wolf down a filling snack of fried rice and mee goreng and to exchange stories of old and pleasant times together. An hour later, with the rain clouds scudding away from the course, we started up again and finished the match at around 2.00 pm

It was rush, rush, rush after that with quick showers and then the buffet which we didn’t have time to do justice to as the ferries were due to leave around 4.30 pm. The result was declared a diplomatic draw, a couple of speeches from both captains ensued and then it was off to the buses again.

14 SSGS members decided to stay the night at the very beautiful Turi Beach Resort (located about three minutes away again) and for the package price quoted which included two rounds of golf, one night’s stay in a lovely room over looking the ocean and a hearty breakfast, we really couldn’t
Go wrong. The icing on the cake was that the courses were empty as we were playing on a weekday.

This course is certainly one we should consider again for our SSGS activities.

Immediate Past President

Toh Shung Chee – Immediate Past President SSGS

Mr Toh Shung Chee or SC Toh, as he is fondly known, had been the President of SSGS from 2002 to 2010. When he was asked to reflect on his time as a long serving President of the Society, his response was that he approached the challenge as something which he ‘never expected any return, only contribution’

That has been the guiding philosophy of his life and career. SC has been involved in many social and charitable causes especially those connected with sports and education. Ask any alumni of Catholic High School about SC Toh and they will be proud to identify him as an outstanding member of their alma mater. He also served as Chairman of the Temasek Junior College Advisory Committee for 23 years!! He has contributed to charitable work since the seventies. In sports he was not only into golf but also actively helped in the promotion of table tennis and basketball. He headed the Singapore Table Tennis Association for a number of years.

SC Toh has just relinquished the Presidency of SSGS so that the society can move to the next higher level with a new leader

SSGS wishes to express its gratitude to SC for his able leadership and achievements. The highlight of his Presidency would have been the very successful 25th ASEAN Senior Amateur Golf Championship in 2008 hosted by Singapore. SSGS will continue to tap on the wisdom and connection that SC Toh will be able to offer
