SSGS 41st Anniversary
SSGS celebrated its 41st Anniversary on 24 September 2009 with a fully subscribed golf game at the Island Course –SICC. This was followed by a grand dinner at the Hong Yuen Restaurant.
The Gold Medal Competition for all the Medal Winners was also held. The coveted jacket and gold medal was won by Yeo Hui Teck. The medal which was of solid gold was donated by Pharmaton, our generous sponsor for the last few years. They also contributed door gifts and other prizes. Tan Ah Lye was best gross winner.
144 members teed off on a short gun start. Those who responded late to the call for entries had to be disappointed as response was overwhelming. The weather was fine but the greens were uneven and difficult for many. The winners managed good scores but there were many laments of missed putts and duffed shots. Pace of play was quite good and there were no frustrated golfers due to excessive slow play. There was plenty of camaraderie and goodwill. It was another good opportunity for members to get together.Members were treated to good food specially prepared by the Hong Yuen kitchen. SSGS ensured that there was a free flow of beer and wine. The selection of fine wine was donated by Tan Ah Lye, our Senior VP. There were table games and a putting competition. Prizes galore were awarded to lucky draw winners. Prizes came from many of our members and our patron, Abraham Loh. Acknowledged for their generosity were President Toh, Captain Raymond Tan, Patrick Ang of Clementi Electronic Cntre, Raymond Chua, Lim Choon Hwa, Goh Eng Keah, Terence Ng, Joseoh Lee and Richard Seet. It is a wonderful thing that our members come forward happily to donate in cash or kind to make our events enjoyable and successful. We welcome the continued support of our generous and enthusiastic members.
It was also a fitting occasion for SSGS to recognize the contributions of four GC members, President Toh Shung Chee, Hon Sec Pang Boon Hee, Leong Teck Kut and Ying Yoke Kwai, who had served the society continuosly for more than 15 years each, Special mention was made of the dedication of the 2 staff members, Nancy Tan and Patrick Kut.
The Society’s record showed that about 80 members are aged 80 to 97. Certificates were presented to those members 80 and above who participated in the 41st Anniversary Game They were Cheong Soon Teik, Tan Teow Chong, Lau Chay Tiong, Vincent Gomez, Lee Jit Seam, Song Chwee Him, Edward Fung and Raymon Huang.
President Toh paid tribute to the pioneer members who had left us the legacy of a successful golf society. He noted that involvement with SSGS was not only a choice of a healthy life-style but it also represented a necessary way of life and the nurturing of habits that are beneficial. It is of benefit to our families and society when we can maintain our independence and enjoy good health. He urged members to Stay Well and Live Well.
The lighted cake with 41 candles was rolled out and there was boisterous singing of ‘Happy Birthday SSGS’ to round off the evening
